Vertical Mailboxes – USPS-Approved for Replacement Use

The USPS updated its requirements for 4C vertical mailboxes in October 2006. The new standards require more substantial and secure commercial mailbox units. These updates apply whether you have a recessed or wall mount mailbox.

4C Mailbox Design and Dimensions

Our 4C vertical mailboxes from Salsbury Industries and Florence Mailboxes offer several improvements over their predecessors. Each unit has an aluminum-finished exterior and a durable powder-coated finish. They are also larger than previous USPS-approved mailboxes, making it easier to deliver and retrieve mail.

The tenant door must be 3” x 12” x 15” with a heavy gauge aluminum finish. The mailboxes must have stainless steel components and locks, making the units ideal for indoor and outdoor use. Other essential features include:

  • Front- or rear-loading capabilities
  • Heavy-duty stainless steel cam locks
  • Various surface mount options
  • Anti-fish comb drop-off slots
  • Door identification placards

4B Mailbox Design and Dimensions

USPS started transitioning from 4B mailboxes to 4C mailboxes in October 2006. The 4B vertical mailbox doesn’t have locks as strong as the 4C model, nor does it provide tenants with the same space. You may still use a 4B vertical apartment mailbox, depending on your building’s age.

Any multi-unit building constructed after October 2006 must use a USPS-approved 4C vertical mailbox. Buildings constructed before that time can use their existing units. These rules apply whether you have recessed or wall mount mailboxes.

Front-Loading Wall Mount

At lowpriceclustermailboxes.com, you can choose from an enormous selection of front-loading wall mount mailboxes. We offer units with up to 50 individual compartments, making them a go-to choice for apartment buildings, offices, and dorms. The extruded aluminum exterior and spacious parcel lockers ensure that tenant’s mail remains safe and secure.

Front-loading vertical mailboxes come with a master loading door that works with the USPS Arrow Lock. The mechanism allows the mail carrier to access all the compartments simultaneously. The mail carrier can deposit items or pick up outgoing mail before securing the Arrow Lock.

Rear-Loading Wall Mount

As your premier mailbox supplier, we have dozens of rear-loading vertical mailboxes for customers, including the latest Salsbury and Florence series. Rear-loading mailboxes work best if the building has a secure mail room. The units don’t have locking mechanisms, so the mail carrier must use a mailroom to drop off and pick up packages.

Office buildings are among the leading purveyors of rear-loading vertical mailboxes. Vertical series ensure fast and efficient mail delivery, regardless of the surface mount. Tenants also benefit from a secure mail slot and parcel locker.

ADA Requirements for Mail Delivery

Make sure to consult ADA guidelines before you install office or apartment mailboxes. The regulations will depend on your city and state. The guidelines exist to protect people’s ability to access their mail, even if they have a physical disability.

For example, apartment mailboxes must have 28 inches of clearance over a finished floor. That number can be as low as 15 inches if the mailbox doesn’t have a parcel locker. Visit the USPS website to learn more about ADA compliance in your area.
